Brooklyn based singer Andy Mac will perform at Kairos Coffee and Tea on July 13. Mac became known in the area when he frequently worked here as a backup vocalist and percussionist.

BUTLER TWP — Brooklyn based singer-songwriter Andy Mac will return to Butler July 13 for a show at Kairos Coffee and Tea on New Castle Road.

Mac became known in Butler in the 1990s, when he frequently worked here as a backup vocalist and percussionist.

Describing his music as "harmony-coated pop mellow," Mac will play guitar in a duo with Adrian Rhen of New York City.

"Since I've been out on my own, I've been doing quite well and for the past two years, I've been getting e-mails and messages all the time from people in Butler who keep asking me to come back into town and do a show of my own," Mac said.

Mac has recently had his music featured on several 20th Century Fox television shows, licensed his entire debut album "Music for a Bright Moon Sky" to MTV, and been featured on XM Radio.

"Andy comes highly recommended," said Bruce Burman, the coffee shop's owner.

"We are always looking for new and exciting talent to bring to the Butler audience because there isn't enough live performance in the area."

In honor of the event, Burman is creating a Big Apple Carmel Latte as the drink special for the evening.

Starting off as a percussionist at age 12, Mac went on to learn guitar and piano.

While pursuing a degree at The University of New York at Buffalo, Mac was elected to the all-male a cappella group The Buffalo Chips. As a member, Mac was honored with several awards, including Best Soloist at the Northeast NACA a cappella competition.

"Women are my main source of inspiration for the music and lyrics," Mac said, citing confusion in that area.

"I think that since many of us can relate to the idea of being confused, this could be why the tunes have mass appeal," he said.

Rhen, who said he uses music to provide a haven for the chaos of life, says this of his art:

"There are times in life that we must do things that we don't want to be doing, and our minds wander off to dream of what we would love to be doing instead.

"Music, for me, is one of those times in my life that I am exactly where I need and want to be. I am home," he said.

After the Butler show, the pair will perform in Philadelphia.
