Short pants are hot again
MILWAUKEE — Shorts are back in a big way for summer. The leg-baring trend slipped onto the fashion scene last year with city shorts — the hot item that left many wondering if they were appropriate for the office.
The answer to that question is "yes," now that shorts come in so many lengths, from the modest, comfortable walking shorts to I-dare-ya short-shorts. And there is certain to be a pair out there for every woman, no matter what her height or shape.
"Shorts are now a staple in a woman's wardrobe, because you can have a variety of lengths and styles, which makes them great for any body type," said Jeanne Parcella, buyer for Venus online women's clothing retailer.
And if you're not wearing shorts this year, ladies, you're just not with it.
"Every summer has an `it' item, and this year, it's shorts," said Nicole Phelps, executive editor of Style.com. "Each short (length) has a different sort of attitude, mood and vibe."
Here's a look at a few of the shorts on the scene and tips on wearing them.
<B>The long and short of it: </B>fitted, striking just below the derriere.<B>Wear it well:</B> with just about anything, from floaty tops and wedge sandals to comfy tees and Converse sneakers or flip-flops.<B>Experts say:</B> "There are tailored short-shorts, which can be worn with a loose, baggy top for balance, and there are the boy shorts, which are more retro or active," Parcella said.<B>We say:</B> They're for the thin, young and adventurous with the legs to match — and are strictly for the beach or the park.
<B>The long and short of it: </B>loose with a cuff, falling mid-thigh.<B>Wear it well:</B> with leg-strapping gladiator sandals and a romantic top.<B>Experts say:</B> "These are directly from the runway and have been showing up for several seasons," Phelps said. "They represent sort of a neo-hippie, Bohemian look that's coming back."<B>We say: </B>Rock them with coming-of-age sex appeal that's neither bold nor subtle, but apparent. Made for any age, height or body type.
<B>The long and short of it:</B> hit right around the knee — just above, across or just below, depending on style.<B>Wear it well:</B> with trim button-downs or fitted polo shirts and flat sandals.<B>Experts say:</B> "These have a preppy feel to them," Phelps said. "They are nice when they're in fun madras prints."<B>We say:</B> All ages, all body types, all appropriate. Beware, shorter women: If they fall below the knee, see a tailor to avoid looking like a little girl playing in mother's closet. And, please, no pleats for anyone!
<B>The long and short of it:</B> tailored to fit much like a pair of slacks; lengths vary according to taste, from mid-thigh to barely below the knee.<B>Wear it well:</B> with polished jackets or sleek blouses and flirty pumps.<B>Experts say:</B> "These are a great alternative to a skirt," Parcella said. "Great for the workplace."<B>We say:</B> A lovely look for the mature fashionista who blends trends, class and with-it sophistication.Sources: Venus.com, Style.com, Journal Sentinel research
