HARRISBURG — Pennsylvania resident and nonresident hunting and furtaker licenses for the 2007-08 season are on sale through The Outdoor Shop on the Game Commission website (www.pgc.state.pa.us).
Licenses also will be available at all Game Commission region offices and the Harrisburg headquarters.
Nearly 850 agents around the state will offer the licenses later this month.
ANAHEIM, Calif. — The Pittsburgh Pirates claimed first baseman-catcher Josh Phelps off waivers from the New York Yankees on Friday.Phelps was expected to join the Pirates Saturday for their game against the Los Angeles Angels.The 29-year-old Phelps was designated for assignment by the Yankees on Tuesday. He hit .263 with two home runs and 12 RBI in 36 games for New York.Phelps is a career .268 hitter with 59 homers and 224 RBIs with Toronto, Cleveland, Tampa Bay and the Yankees.
CROMWELL, Conn. — David Toms shot a 5-under-par 65 Friday to move into a tie for the second-round lead at the blustery, rainy Travelers Championship.Toms, who has had five top-10 finishes this year, shares the lead at 8 under with journeyman Jay Williamson, who had a 66 for the second straight day in just his second PGA Tour event of the year.
COLUMBUS, Ohio — For the first time, Americans were taken with the top two picks in the NHL draft.Chicago, trying to rebuild a once-proud franchise after four consecutive losing seasons, selected Patrick Kane with the first pick Friday. The 5-foot-9, 160-pound right wing scored 62 goals and had 83 assists in 58 games last season with the London Knights of the Ontario Hockey League.Philadelphia then selected left wing James vanRiemsdyk with the second pick. The 6-3, 200-pound physical power forward had 33 goals and 30 assists in 42 games for the U.S. National Under-18 team a year ago.
