George M. Campbell Sr., 83, died at 8:15 a.m. Friday at his home at the Niagara Village Retirement Community, Erie.

He was an honorably discharged World War II veteran of the Marine Corps. He was trained as a combat scout-sniper at Camp Lejeune, N.C.; and after training, he was assigned to the U.S. Naval War College, Newport, R.I., where he was staff chauffer to then-Vice Admiral Spruance. Later in the war, he was assigned to the U.S. Naval Station, Pearl Harbor, and was part of the invasion force assembled for the assault on Fortress Japan, which was aborted when the United States dropped atom bombs on Hiroshima and Nagasaki.

Following the war, he returned to his hometown of Chicora; and shortly thereafter, he moved to Erie, where he worked for a time at General Electric. He then had been an auto body repairman at Amman Brothers and Al Appell Motors until 1953, when he and a partner, Bert Allison, began C&A Collision Service, Erie.

In 1964, he joined the staff of the Erie Insurance Group as a physical damage appraiser, rose to management positions, and retired in 1986.

He was a member of St. John’s Evangelical Lutheran Church, Girard, Erie County.

He was active in the Fairview, Erie County, community for many years, served as Boy Scout master of Fairview Troop 68, then was a volunteer with the Otsego District. He also was a volunteer firefighter and participated in the Fairview Garden Club. He was an avid, hunter, fisherman and golfer and enjoyed cards and other competitive games.

Surviving are his wife, Nellie Irene McIntyre Campbell of Niagara Village, whom he married in 1947; four children, George M. Campbell II of Girard, the Rev. Dr. Norman W. Campbell of Indianapolis, Ind., Kevin O. Campbell of Elkhart, Ind., and Sandi Orban of Glens Falls, N.Y.; five grandchildren; a brother, Thomas Campbell of Junction City, Kan.; and several nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by a sister, a half sister and two half brothers.

CAMPBELL — Services for George M. Campbell Sr., who died Friday, May 11, 2007, were held at noon today at St. John’s Evangelical Lutheran Church, Girard, with the Rev Andrew Edwards officiating.
