HOUSTON — The first slots casino in southwestern Pennsylvania opened with great fanfare Monday, with hundreds of people lining up to try their luck.

The Meadows Racetrack & Casino became the fifth gambling parlor in Pennsylvania when it opened at 8:45 a.m., after a ribbon-cutting ceremony.

The slots casino opened a week late because security improvements were needed.

Over the weekend, invited guests tried out the 1,738-machine facility, allowing state game regulators to ensure things were running smoothly and raising $100,000 for charity, officials said.

The casino is housed in a temporary structure that eventually will be replaced by a permanent parlor near the Meadows' harness track, which is slated to open in 2009.
