Gabe Grinder of Seneca Valley and Andy Onufrak and Brian Warheit of Butler will be on the Class AAAA team, and Mars' D.J. Cannon and Zach Zollner are part of the Class AAA team for the WPIAL Baseball Coaches Association's All-Star doubleheader Saturday.
The WPIAL Class A all-stars will play the Class AA stars at 3:30 p.m., while the Class AAA stars will play the Class AAAA stars at 6. Both games are at Ross Memorial Park in Washington, Pa.
About 125 of the region's best juniors will perform for college baseball coaches and professional scouts at 8 a.m. Saturday at Ross Memorial Park.
Slippery Rock University sophomores Jeff Weiss and Jennifer Hansen were named to the Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference's Top 10 for the 2007 spring sports season.Weiss, a star on The Rock's men's outdoor track and field team, was the Track MVP of the 2007 PSAC Outdoor Championships after winning the 5,000- and 10,000-meter runs.He also earned All-America status following a fourth-place finish at the NCAA Championships while keeping a 3.46 grade-point average in the health and physical education field.Hansen, a member of SRU's women's outdoor track and field team, finished as the nation's runner-up in the pole vault with a PSAC-record height of 12 feet, 9Z\x inches.She owns a 4.00 GPA as an exercise science major.
Butler's John Aubrey, Sr., owner of Aubrey's Dubbs Dred Golf Course, finished in a five-way tie for sixth place at the 2007 Tam O'Shanter Open Monday in Hermitage.Aubrey carded a two-under-par 70 (36-34), four strokes behind the event's winner, Williams Country Club's Brent Johnson.
ORLANDO, Fla. — The Orlando Magic are offering refunds to fans who bought season tickets just after Billy Donovan's hiring.More than 200 packages sold within 24 hours of the announcement that the Magic had lured Donovan away from Florida, where he won two straight NCAA titles. Donovan changed his mind a day after his May 31 introduction, deciding to return to the Gators.The Magic said Monday they were contacting individual fans who bought tickets within 48 hours of the Donovan announcement. So far some have decided to keep the tickets, the team said without specifying an amount.
NEW YORK — Vern Hoscheit, a coach on four World Series championship teams with the Oakland Athletics and the New York Mets, died Monday in Pierce, Neb. He was 85.Hoscheit, the Mets' bullpen coach from 1984-87, died at the Pierce Manor nursing home following a long illness, team spokesman Jay Horwitz said.Born in Brunswick, Neb., Hoscheit was a catcher in the New York Yankees' farm system for 12 seasons starting in 1941. He was a general manager for Quincy (1955-56), Peoria (1957), Greensboro (1958-59), then became president of the
Hoscheit joined the Baltimore Orioles and was a scout and minor league coordinator (1962-67) and coach (1968). He switched to the Oakland Athletics and was a coach from 1969-74, earning World Series rings in his final three seasons.
