Bowers 50th anniversary
Robert and Eleanor "Tootie" Bowers of Butler celebrated 50 years of marriage Saturday with an open house at Community Alliance Church in Center Township.
The former Eleanor Cuffman married Bowers on June 14, 1957, at the Mercer Street Christian and Missionary Alliance Church in Butler.
They have three daughters, Bonnie Matonak, Susan Conrad and Carol Lenhart, all of Butler.
They also have nine grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.
Bowers retired from Armco Steel after 30 years. He was also employed for 10 years by the Endicott Johnson Company in Butler, Tarentum and Lower Burrell and for three years by J.C. Penney in Lower Burrell. He was awarded the Outstanding Distributive Education Student Award from Butler High School in 1957.
Mrs. Bowers worked at Montgomery Ward for three years and as the administrative secretary of Community Alliance Church in Butler for 10 years.
The couple belongs to Community Alliance Church, where Bowers has been active for 69 years and Mrs. Bowers has been active for 71 years. At the church, Bowers served as church treasurer for 10 years and Mrs. Bowers served as chairwoman of the Deaconess Committee for eight years. They are also former members of the church choir and served as youth group sponsors for nine years.
The Bowerses are also former members of the BUCCO Club.
