Popovic

Rudolph J. "Rudy" Popovic, 89, of Butler died Saturday at the Sunnyview Home.

Born Oct. 21, 1917, in Lyndora, he was a son of Rudolph and Julia Vadovich Popovic.

He graduated from Butler High School in 1935 and he also was a graduate of the Western Horological Institute of Pennsylvania.

Mr. Popovic was a World War II veteran of the Army-Air Corps. He attained the rank of technical sergeant and served in the South Pacific and the Philippines.

He had been a watchmaker and owned and operated the St. John's Center Jewelry store on Main Street in Lyndora for several years. He later was the watchmaker at the E.C. Meyers Jewelry store in Butler. Following that, he worked for the U.S. Postal Service at the Butler Post Office for 27 years and retired in 1984 as the financial supervisor.

Mr. Popovic had been an active member of the former St. John Catholic Church in Lyndora, where he had been an altar server until he was 21 and belonged to the choir for more than 35 years. He was a current member of St. Fidelis Roman Catholic Church in Lyndora.

He was also a member of the First Catholic Slovak Jednota and was an honorary life member of the Knights of Columbus, Butler Council 866 and a former member of the Fourth Degree of the Knights, St, Fidelis Assembly.

Surviving are his wife, Mary Mikula Popovic, whom he married May 30, 1950; two sisters, Sister Mary Antoinette O.S.F. of the School Sisters of St. Francis in Bellevue, Pittsburgh and Margaret Prokopchak of Erie; and numerous nieces and nephews.

A brother and two sisters preceded him in death.

<B>POPOVIC </B>—<B> </B>Friends of Rudolph J. "Rudy" Popovic, who died Saturday, April 28, 2007, will be received from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. Tuesday at the <B>Geibel Funeral Home</B>, 201 E. Cunningham St. A Mass of Christian burial will be celebrated at 11 a.m. Wednesday at St. Fidelis Roman Catholic Church, 303 Penn Ave., Lyndora, with the Rev. George Palick, parochial vicar, officiating. Burial will follow at the Calvary Cemetery.The Bereavement Committee of St. Fidelis Parish will hold a parish vigil service at 3 p.m. Tuesday at the funeral home.Members of the Butler Council Knights of Columbus will recite the rosary at 8:30 p.m. Tuesday at the funeral home.
