Seneca Valley pitcher-first baseman Cory Mazzoni and coach Eric Semega were named WPIAL Class AAAA Player and Coach of the Year, respectively, by the WPIAL Baseball Coaches Association.
Mazzoni was 7-0 as a pitcher with a 0.73 earned run average and 65 strikeouts in 48 innings. He also hit .370 with six homers and 17 RBI.
Semega led a junior-laden team to 16 consecutive regular season wins and an undefeated section season.
The duo will be honored at a June 15 awards banquet at the Radisson Hotel in Greentree.
PITTSBURGH — The Pittsburgh Steelers released veteran punter Chris Gardocki on Wednesday.Gardocki signed with the Steelers before the 2004 season. The 16-year veteran was drafted by the Chicago Bears in 1991 and has also played for the Indianapolis Colts and Cleveland Browns.The Steelers traded up in the fourth round of last month's draft to take Baylor punter Daniel Sepulveda, the first two-time winner of the Ray Guy award as college football's best punter.Gardocki, a Pro Bowl selection following the 1996 season, has never had a punt blocked. He averaged a career-best 45.7 yards per kick last season.
LOS ANGELES — Keyshawn Johnson has caught the damn ball in the NFL for the last time.Keyshawn Johnson, who played a great game and talked one as well during an 11-year career, retired Wednesday despite several offers to continue playing.He'll soon be expressing his strong opinions on ESPN.Johnson has agreed to a multiyear contract, and will appear on several ESPN telecasts, including pre-game shows on Sundays and Monday nights, and do some radio work as well.
