Players for the Moniteau softball team must have felt like a gigantic weight had been lifted from their shoulders.

The Warriors (10-6) finally found a way to get the best of rival Brookville, and it came in the form of a 4-1 District 9 Class AA first-round playoff win Monday afternoon.

Moniteau had been knocked out of the district tournament by the Raiders in 2002, 2005 and 2006.

"It's an incredible feeling," said Warriors coach Dan Hindman. "It's something we've been talking about for a long time."

Moniteau's Martina Burk showed why she was named Monday to the Keystone Shortway Athletic Conference first team as a pitcher, giving up one run on seven hits and striking out six without allowing a walk. She did hit a batter.

Brandy Neff singled, doubled, drove in two runs and scored another in the win.

The Warriors will travel to top-seeded Kane for a district semifinal showdown at 4:30 p.m. Wednesday.

"We have to keep this in perspective," Hindman said. "We still have a ways to go to win District 9, and this win was just another step toward that."
