WEXFORD — Never mind the 12-day layoff. Seneca Valley had a lot going on Monday afternoon.

A stellar pitching performance. Productivity at the top of the lineup. Run-producing hits with two outs.

It all added up to a 7-1 WPIAL Class AAAA quarterfinal baseball victory over Franklin Regional at North Allegheny High School.

Cory Mazzoni improved his record to 8-0 in a complete-game effort, striking out nine and allowing three hits. He gave up just one hit — a leadoff double to pinch-hitter Andy Parnell in the seventh — after the first inning.

"He began to tire a little bit late in the game," Raiders coach Eric Semega said. "But all in all, Cory pitched a very solid game."

And he received immediate support offensively, courtesy of the top of the batting order.

Seneca Valley trailed 1-0 entering the bottom of the first, but Ken Walrond singled sharply to left and Shaine Patsilevas reached on a bunt single. Walrond scored on the play when Franklin Regional pitcher Dave Casper threw the ball away.

Andrew Fornadel's two-out single to right plated Patsilevas and the Raiders had the lead they never lost.

Patsilevas, who was 4-for-4 on the day, added a two-out, two-run double in the second. Pinch-hitter Kevin Rohm delivered a two-out, two-run double in the third.

Franklin Regional committed four errors in the game, including a botched rundown and a double-play grounder that rolled through the second baseman's legs.

"The errors combined with those two-out hits killed us," Panthers coach Larry Wayman said. "We usually field the ball pretty well. This was just one of those games."

Walrond and Patsilevas combined to go 7-for-8 with four runs scored and the two RBI.

"It's just hitting with confidence," Semega said of the two-out RBI hits. "Shaine Patsilevas had an excellent, excellent day at the plate. You could just tell with his approach today they weren't going to get him out."

The four-hit performance was the first of the season for Patsilevas, who began the season hitting in the No. 8 spot. He moved up when Mike Eonta went down with an injury.

Two of Patsilevas' hits came on bunts.

"I practice bunting 10 to 15 minutes a day," Patsilevas said. "It's a big part of my game."

"That's one of the reasons we hit him second, because he's such a good bunter," Semega said.

Mazzoni threw 106 pitches, 61 for strikes. He walked two batters and hit three others. He allowed five baserunners in the last two innings after permitting four in the first five frames.

"My changeup was a bit rusty today, but I could throw my curve and fastball for strikes. They (Panther hitters) like to sit on fastballs early in the count, so we started them off with a lot of breaking stuff."

The Raiders won their 17th consecutive game and will face Bethel Park — an 8-3 winner over Canon-McMillan Monday night — in the semifinals at a site, date and time to be determined.
