KENNEDY TWP — It's been someone different every game for the Seneca Valley softball team.

On Monday it was Lindsay Troyer.

Troyer hit an opposite field, two-out grand slam home run in the top of the fourth inning to give the Raiders a 5-0 lead on the way to a 9-2 win over Connellsville in the second round of the WPIAL Quad A playoffs at Fairhaven Park.

Troyer became yet another in a long line of heroines this season for Seneca Valley.

"We've been like that all year — someone has always come through," said Seneca Valley coach George Trew. "It's the whole team. One through nine, it can be someone different every night. (Troyer) has come through with some big hits from time to time."

Few were as big as her shot against a scrappy Connellsville team that was hanging around against the heavily favored Raiders.

Seneca Valley managed just five hits against Connellsville pitcher Erica Bartholow, but it made them all count.

The Raiders (18-1) scored an unearned run in the first inning. Then, with two outs in the fourth inning, Megan McCormick singled and Nicole Lollo and Kelsey Gray drew back-to-back walks to set the stage for Troyer's blast.

"We had four real good at-bats in that inning," Trew said. "We were patient. We gave her a chance to hit that home run."

The runs were more than enough for Seneca Valley pitcher Lauren Pennell, who gave up just two hits before the seventh inning. The two runs scored against her were unearned.

If there was one negative in Seneca Valley's play, it was the defense. Usually sure handed, the Raiders committed four errors.

Part of the problem had to do with an 11-day layoff. Seneca Valley last played on May 10. The Raiders had a bye in the first round of the WPIAL playoffs.

"We had a pretty long layoff," Trew said. "It was good to get back out there."

The Raiders will play Hempfield, a team they defeated 7-0 earlier in the season, in the WPIAL semifinals. The day, site and time have yet to be determined.

Thirteen runs, 17 hits and seven errors.Those were the ugly, crooked numbers that stared the Knoch High School softball team right in the face.Elizabeth Forward took advantage of every hit and every Knoch error in a 13-2 win at Fairhaven Park Monday afternoon.Tori Paterra hit the first pitch of the game from Knoch hurler Stephanie Fincher over the left field fence for a home run.It only got worse from there."It wasn't our time," said Knoch coach Scott Docherty. "We didn't come to play."Knoch managed to tie the game at 1 in the bottom of the first on an RBI single by Jade Thrower, but Elizabeth Forward took the lead for good in the third inning on a two-run single by Angelica Dull.The big blow came in the top of the fourth inning when Kristen Hawkins hit a three-run home run over the concession stand in left field — a shot that went an estimated 275 feet.Knoch committed seven errors, but had several more mental ones."I had us giving them 10 runs," Docherty said. "We had 11 errors as far as I'm concerned. You're being far too nice to us."Elizabeth Forward broke the game wide open in the seventh, scoring six unearned runs off Knoch pitcher Stephanie Fincher.Knoch was without second baseman and pitcher Chelsea Martin, who was diagnosed with mononucleosis late last week."The long and short of it is you don't take a Chelsea Martin out of your lineup, who's hitting .453 — that hurts," Docherty said. "She's scored more runs and driven in more runs than anyone on the team."Despite the disappointing playoff loss, it has been quite a season for Knoch.The Knights made their first playoff appearance since 1993 and won their first postseason game in school history.
