SLIPPERY ROCK — In Friday’s game against Kennedy Catholic, the Slippery Rock softball team reversed a pair of trends.

“It’s been our theme to get plenty of hits late in the game,” said Rockets coach Zoe McDowell. “And usually we have a bad inning that’s hurt us. We eliminated that from this game.”

True, the Rockets did get a flurry of hits against the Eagles, but this time were able to plate two runs in the fifth inning and four more in the sixth to post a 6-3, come-from-behind victory in District 10 action.

After Eagles pitcher Katie Ritchey scattered five hits in the first four innings, she allowed six runs, six hits and four walks over the next two.

“She looked like she’d run out of gas,” said Kennedy Catholic coach John Vasconi. “I certainly couldn’t ask for more from Katie.”

Trailing 2-0 with two outs in the bottom of the fifth, Slippery Rock received a Hillary Pendel infield single.

Morgan Robinson lofted a fly ball that fell between left fielder Sam Wiesen and center fielder Chloe Vernon that allowed Pendel to score. Sam Volponi then lined an RBI double to knot the game at 2.

In the sixth inning, Jamie Laughner and Sara Kotomoski led off the inning with consecutive singles and Alyssa Newcomb walked to load the bases.

Amanda Shearer hit a fly ball to Vernon, who dropped the ball, but was able to throw out courtesy runner Miranda Brazell at the plate. Brazell had to hold to tag up, but Vernon was able to pick up the ball quickly and make a solid throw to home to record the out.

Pendel gave the Rockets the lead when her dribbler back to the mound scored Kotomoski. Ritchey slipped while reaching for the ball and couldn’t muster a throw to home.

Robinson and Leah Mortimer drew RBI walks around an infield run-scoring single by Sam Volponi to make it 6-2.

“Morgan and Sammy are a couple of strong hitters in the lineup,” said Vasconi. “You can’t bring them up with runners on base.”

The Eagles seemed to miss on several opportunities to score early. They stranded six runners in the first four innings — including a bases- loaded situation in the fourth inning — and led only 1-0.

A two-out RBI double by Rachel Zoccole in the first inning and a two-out RBI single by Liza Cataria in the fifth inning had given the Eagles a 2-0 advantage before the Rockets made their comeback.

Robinson kept the Eagles in check, striking out nine and walking three.

“For a freshman, she’s very composed,” said McDowell. “She’s very confident, but not a cocky confidence. She’s worked hard, and, as the season’s gone on, she’s fined-tuned her pitching.”
