Nurses at VA aid kids
Nurses from the Butler Veterans Affairs Medical Center on Tuesday donated clothes and money for the students at Broad Street Elementary.
Carol Herrock, a clinical nurse reviewer at the center, suggested the school as the beneficiary of the collection after she heard from district officials when she was in the Butler County Leadership class.
“It tugs at your heartstrings,” she said.
Herrock said the school principal and Ed Fink, Butler School District superintendent, described to her the plight of some students who don’t have basic hygienic items such as soap or socks to wear to school. The school has a location where students can get these kinds of supplies, she said.
In honor of National Nurses Week, Sharon Parson, who runs the nurses’ advisory board at the center, asked for suggestions of a charity to help. Herrock suggested the school.
The drive for supplies was open to the entire center, and the nurses collected 20 bags of new and used clothes, as well as $40.
