BUTLER TWP — Stage 1 is complete.

Butler County athletes looking to reach the PIAA Track and Field Championships cleared their first hurdle Tuesday at the WPIAL Class AAA Northern Qualifiers at Butler High School.

As usual, the goal with the qualifiers is to get your top athletes to the WPIAL finals, then hopefully take that next step to Shippensburg for the state finals.

"For the most part, the kids who we thought would qualify did," said Butler boys coach Rick Schontz. "When you get to the finals of these races, the kids don't back off. For the most part, everyone's giving 100 percent.

"You never know, though. One through eight is evenly balanced," Schontz added.

The top eight finishers in each event advance to the WPIAL finals, where they'll be joined by the top eight from two other WPIAL qualifiers. Places still hold a key for seeding purposes at the finals May 19.

Butler had 11 athletes qualify in the non-relay events while all three relay squads advanced, including a second-place effort by the 400 and 1,600 relays.

Logan Renwick qualified in the 110 hurdles. the long jump and the triple jump, while Mike Martin also qualified in the long and triple jumps.

Tim Miles led the way for Seneca Valley with a pair of second-place showings in the shot put and discus. The 1,600-relay team was the Raiders boys lone first-place winner and relay qualifier.

Chris Cipro placed second behind Central Catholic's Scott VanKooten in the 3,200 run.

"I didn't see any big shocks," said Seneca Valley coach Wayne Roccia. "Everything just fell into place."

Knoch won the opening 3,200 relay (8:14.6) and also saw Brian Tackett claim the 800 run, as he was the only runner to break 2 minutes.

"Our 4x800, that's what we've worked on," said Knoch boys coach Wess Brahler. "We're trying to get a team qualified for states. Now we just have to run a little faster. I think at 8:05, we'll have a shot.

"We're pretty excited. This is exactly what we expected (eight individuals plus two relays)," Brahler added.

On the girls side, Butler's Ashley Lotz qualified in four events (100 hurdles, high, long and triple jumps), while Lea Renwick won the 100 and Tess Crispin was second in the 1,600.

The Raiders girls also had several strong performances, led by Jen Boyd, who qualified in four events, including all three jumps (winning the high and triple jumps), and teammate Da'Lynn Mills, who won the high jump with Boyd, plus the 200 and anchored the winning 400 relay. Mills didn't run the 1,600 relay Tuesday, but most likely will take her spot back at the WPIAL finals.

All three Raiders relays qualified, with the 3,200 relay also placing first.

The Knoch girls had five athletes advance, including Carol Cress in both the shot put and discus, while the Mars girls had just one qualifier: the 3,200 relay, which finished eighth.
