WPIAL announces its 1st Hall of Fame class

The WPIAL is finalizing plans for its inaugural Hall of Fame banquet and induction ceremony.

The event will take place June 22 at the Embassy Suites Hotel in Moon Township.

Tickets must be bought before June 8 and can be obtained by using the reservation form that can be downloaded at www.wpial.com.

Tickets are $40 per person and accommodations can be made for tables of 10.

The following is a list of the WPIALHall of Fame's inaugural class:

Walter "Pete"Antimarino, Gateway: Coached the Gators from 1958-89, had a 236-80-12 record and won three WPIALchampionships. Was also 255-93-2 at Pitcairn High School.Dave Nichol, Monaca: Won 492 games in 39 years as baseball coach and 475 games in 30 years as basketball coach. Won a WPIALand state title in basketball, was a WPIALand a state runner-up in baseball.Don Graham, North Catholic: Winningest coach in Pennsylvania boys basketball history with an 801-436 record in 51 years, including three Catholic state championships.Pat Campbell, Bethel Park: In 21 seasons as Bethel's boys swim coach, won 11 WPIAL titles and six state championships. Was 335-59 in dual meets.

North Hills football, 1987: Ranked No. 1 in the country by USA Today, finished 13-0 and outscored opponents 435-20. Posted 11 shutouts and first-team defense did not allow a point.Bethel Park boys swimming, 1987: Six swimmers reached all-American status and team was ranked No. 2 in the country. Scored 176 points at PIAA Championships, most ever by a boys team.

Sean Shapert, Moon: A 1985 graduate who scored 213 goals in soccer, still a national high school record, and scored 88 goals as a junior to lead team to WPIALchampionship.Bill Fralic, Penn Hills: One of the best football linemen to come out of the WPIAL. A 1981 graduate and Parade All-American, also was 98-7 as a wrestler.Suzie McConnell, Seton-LaSalle: Led school to the first Class AAAAstate championship in 1984 and finished her career with 1,934 points, 953 assists and 813 steals.Dick Hoak, Jeannette: Star quarterback-defensive back on Jayhawks' 1956 WPIALchampionship team. Garnered all-state honors in football, all-section in basketball, three-year letterman in track.Jennifer Flynn-Oldenburg, Baldwin: Won 12 varsity letters from 1992-96 in volleyball, basketball and softball. Was twice all-state and three times all-WPIALin volleyball. Won three WPIALvolleyball titles and four WPIALtitles as shortstop on softball team.Arnold Palmer, Latrobe: Became first golfer to win back-to-back WPIALand state titles in 1946-47. Won the 1947 WPIALtitle with a 69 at Westmoreland Country Club and shot a 68 during a state tournament round.Cary Kolat, Jefferson-Morgan: Posted a 137-0 career record in wrestling, won four state championships and was voted tournament's outstanding wrestler each time.

Jim Horner: A product of Montour High School, he officiated wrestling for 27 years, working close to 700 dual meets, the WPIALindividual tournament 25 times, the team tournament 21 times and the state tournament eight times.Norm Crawford: Worked as a starter for high school track meets for the better part of four decades. Has been head starter at the state championships the past 20 years and was starter at the 1984 and 1996 Olympic Games. A 1940 graduate of Coraopolis High School.

Charles "Ace"Heberling: Rapid growth of WPIALled to his employment as league's first full-time executive director. An active PIAAfootball and basketball official for 15 years, also enjoyed successful career as NFLofficial for 23 years and worked three Super Bowl games.
