JACKSON TWP — Jackie Mangola was the last person the North Hills softball team wanted to see at the plate.

And with good reason.

By the time she came to bat in the bottom of the seventh inning, the Seneca Valley second baseman had hit a home run and a double.

And with the Raiders trailing North Hills 3-2 with two outs in the home team's last at-bat, Mangola delivered a two-run single to right field that scored Ashley Watkins and Liz Dorogy to give SV a 4-3 win, which keeps the team undefeated.

"She came up big for us," SV coach George Trew said of Mangola's 3-for-4 day, which included two runs scored and three RBI. "All three of her hits were huge."

Watkins got things started for the Raiders in the seventh with a one-out double.

Following Dana Hughes' flyout, Dorogy legged out an infield single, which chased Watkins to third base.

Dorogy then took second on catcher's indifference before Mangola's game-winning hit, which came on the fifth pitch she saw from North Hills starter Rachel Van Atta.

"I wasn't sure if she was just going to walk me or not," Mangola said. "But once the count went to 3-1, I was going to hit the next good pitch I saw."

"We tried to keep the ball outside, but she just went out and got it," said Indians coach Dana Pecanis. "What are you going to do?"

It was the second lead that North Hills (8-4, 3-4) has blown against the Raiders (13-0, 10-0) this season.

On April 4, North Hills led SV 5-0 before the Raiders rallied for a 9-7 win.

"This is a tough loss to swallow," said Pecanis. "But the girls know they played hard."

Courtney Grootegoed got the win after relieving Raiders starter Lauren Pennell with one out in the top of the seventh.

One-half inning earlier, Grootegoed found herself at the other end of the spectrum.

With one out in the bottom of the sixth and SV trailing 3-1, Mangola and Grootegoed were on third and second base, respectively, when Megan McCormick drove a Van Atta pitch to deep center field.

North Hills' Louanne Wiegand made a diving catch along the fence for the second out, and Mangola tagged from third to score the Raiders' second run.

But Grootegoed never left second base on the play, and when the next batter, Nicole Lollo, singled, Grootegoed could advance no farther than third base.

She was left stranded there when Van Atta got pinch-hitter Kelsey Gray to ground out to end the inning.

With one out and two runners on base in the top of the seventh inning, Grootegoed redeemed herself when she entered the game and kept SV's deficit at just one run.

After striking out Nicole Tschannen for the second out, Grootegoed walked Megan Hollyfield to load the bases before getting Van Atta on a lineout to shortstop.

"She didn't let it get to her," Trew said of Grootegoed's baserunning mistake. "When she came in to pitch, we needed two outs and she got them."

Pennell pitched 6Z\c innings, striking out three and walking one.

After North Hills took a 1-0 lead in the top of the second inning, Mangola tied the game with a solo home run to center field in the bottom of the fourth.

The Indians came right back with a two-spot in the next half inning when Kelly Cummings' base hit scored Stefanie Wiegand and Mallory Klein.
