Students hear from chef, puppet designer

Phillip Cerminara, executive chef at the Sheraton Four Points in Cranberry, tells students at Summit Elementary School about his job during Career Share Day Friday.
Summit holds Career Share

SUMMIT TWP — In the hallway of Summit Elementary, short essays make it look like an entire NFLteam is springing up from the school.

"I want to be a professional football player," about a third of the student essays read. Others note dreams of careers on a SWAT team or baseball team.

In the classroom Friday, students didn't hear from any professional athletes, but they still were excited to learn about a variety of careers at the 10th Career Share.

Kathy McNally, who has a child at the school, showed how she makes a team of puppets.

McNally is a puppet designer and wardrobe specialist for Sadecky Puppets. The company writes, records, and performs skits that travel to schools.

She showed a room of students how blocks of foam become the puppets that are cast in shows. She explained the process of building a head, body, arms and face using various foam, forms and wire.

Down the hall, Alex Gladis, an anthropology instructor at Butler County Community College, explained the differences between archeology, paleontology and ethnology.

Phillip Cerminara, executive chef at the Four Points Sheraton, talked to a class of students wearing toques about carving ice.

In the multipurpose room, the students learned about the job of someone who can't talk. O'Shea, a bereavement-trained Golden Retriever and Labrador, was with Robin S. Miller of Thompson-Miller Funeral Home. Miller told the students about O'Shea's job helping people grieve.

Career Share is an annual event in the Butler School District. Guidance counselor Dennis Ditch organizes it for one of several elementary schools on a rotating basis.
