Harvey2 volunteers honored for work at McConnells Mill

SLIPPERY ROCK TWP, Lawrence County — A Portersville woman and a Beaver County man have been honored with the Governor's Take Pride Appreciation Award for volunteer work they have done at McConnells Mill State Park.

Polly Shaw of Portersville has been a volunteer at the park for more than eight years, serving as a site host and interpretive tour guide at the mill one day each week.

Shaw's work includes greeting visitors, cleaning the mill, giving guided tours and picking up litter.

Harvey Stephanosky of Rochester was honored for his hours spent researching the history of the people and the milling machinery.The research has helped create a clearer picture of the happenings in and around the mill and how events helped to shape the community.The two were honored by the Pennsylvania Department of Conservation and Natural Resources, which oversees the park.The award is presented to a group or an individual for a project or program that promotes the goals and mission of Take Pride in America.Take Pride in America was started in 2003 by the Secretary of the Interior to care for the public land.
