JACKSON TWP — It's not that the Seneca Valley baseball team has anything against manufacturing runs.

But on Wednesday it relied on instant offense, aka the long ball.

Phil Double's two-run home run in the bottom of the first inning was followed by Cory Mazzoni's solo blast in the sixth as the Raiders beat North Hills, 3-1 on a cold and rainy day at Raider Field.

Mazzoni picked up the win, striking out seven and walking two in a complete game. He gave up an unearned run in the fourth inning.

The Raiders (6-1, 3-0) had six hits and tallied more than one base hit in a frame twice in the bottom of the second and sixth innings.

"I'd like to see us have more hits," said SV coach Eric Semega. "But (Andy) Heck is a great pitcher. He's got good stuff and it was good to see our guys battle."

Heck, a three-year starter for North Hills, struck out nine and walked one in six innings.

But two pitches cost him the game.

After SV's Ken Walrond reached on an error to lead off the bottom of the first inning, Double sent a pitch the other way and it carried over the right-field fence for a 2-0 lead.

Then, with the Raiders looking to add to a 2-1 lead in the sixth, Mazzoni helped his own cause by homering to right.

"I thought Andy threw a great game," said North Hills coach Nate Buttenfield. "He just made a couple of mistake pitches that happened to go over the fence."

The Indians (3-3, 1-1) managed a bit of a rally in the seventh inning.

After one out, Mazzoni surrendered his only two walks to consecutive hitters — Brad Scullion and Brian Wisniewski.

But the next batter, Heck, grounded back to Mazzoni and the pitcher began a 1-6-3 double play that ended the game.

It wasn't the only defensive play that involved Mazzoni.

In the top of the sixth, North Hills had runners on second and third with one out when Pat Bauer hit a dribbler up the first-base line.

Mazzoni sprinted from the mound, scooped up the ball and tagged out Bauer halfway between home and first base. The Indians baserunners were forced to stay put and the next batter, Ben Wainwright, struck out to end the threat.

The Indians scored their lone run in the top of the fourth when Jesse Bauer singled, moved to second on a sacrifice bunt and came home on a throwing error.

North Hills scored 25 runs in its first two games of the season, but tallied a combined eight runs in the last four games.
