Planets' Glomb pitches no-hitter vs. Burrell

Monica Glomb began the 2007 season in style.

After missing Thursday's season-opener against Indiana, the Mars senior softball pitcher managed a no-hitter in the Planets' 2-0 victory over Kittanning on Friday.

Glomb, who struck out 15, was two batters away from a perfect game. She walked a batter in the second inning and hit one in the sixth.

Both of the Planets' runs came in the top of the fifth inning, when Jaime Fiorina and Emma Wharrey tallied run-scoring singles. Zara Zollner and Fiorina scored the runs.

Mars (1-1) travels to Highlands on Monday.

In other games:

• Stephanie Fincher notched nine strikeouts in a complete-game shutout as Knoch beat Deer Lakes, 4-0.

• Samantha Bly hit a home run and Samantha Pyle singled twice, doubled and tripled for Karns City, but the Gremlins lost to Ford City, 7-6.

• A 15-hit attack and a six-run third inning were not enough in Butler's 11-9 loss to Burrell.

Jenna Geibel singled twice, doubled and tripled for the Golden Tornado.

• Martina Burk fanned 11 batters in Moniteau's 9-5 victory over Grove City.
