ADAMS TWP — The Mars softball team had one bad inning — and it cost the Planets the game.

Trailing 1-0 in the top of the fourth inning, Indiana scored three runs on three hits to take the lead for good in a 3-1 win Thursday afternoon.

With a runner on second and one out, Indiana's Joelle Wisnieski hit a pop fly that Mars pitcher Jaime Fiorina and shortstop Saber Horner circled under.

But neither player took charge and the ball fell to the ground for a base hit.

Following a double steal, Indiana's Danielle Corle scored on a fielder's choice. Three batters later, Chelsea Rinehart smoked a single down the left field line to score Katie Harley and Leann Broadbent.

"It was a mental breakdown," Mars coach Michele Goodworth said of the pop fly. "You know, it's Western Pennsylvania, and, with the weather, this was our first game. Our first two were canceled. You're just looking to see how the players are going to react."

Fiorina shouldered the defeat, striking out one and walking one in a complete game.

"She's been out the last two years with a hip injury," Goodworth said of the junior. "This was her first varsity start and I thought she did well."

Mars senior pitcher Monica Glomb, who led the Planets to the WPIAL Class AAA title last season, dressed but did not play.

Aside from the fourth inning, the Planets played well in the field.

But Indiana's Melissa Wilson made sure that her team's two-run lead stood up.

The junior pitcher allowed just four base runners over the final four innings, including two on fielding errors.

She retired the Planets in order in the sixth and seventh frames, finishing the game with five strikeouts and one walk.

"This is her second full season as a starter," said Indians coach Harold Wilson of his ace. "It was a good finish today."

Despite three fielding errors behind her, Wilson also received great defensive play at times.

After giving up the lead, Mars was on the verge of closing the gap in the bottom of the fifth inning.

With two outs and Zara Zollner on second, Kaitlyn Cubarney slapped a single to center field.

Zollner rounded third base and sprinted for home, but Rinehart threw a perfect strike to Indiana catcher Danielle Corle, who hung on to the ball after colliding with Zollner.

The Planets (0-1) scored their only run in the bottom of the first inning when Brittany Berkopec reached on an error, stole second, moved to third on a groundout and came home on Kelsey Ferguson's base hit.
