JACKSON TWP — It wasn't pretty.

But it got the job done.

The Seneca Valley baseball team was clinging to a 7-6 lead over Baldwin as the Highlanders came to bat in the top of the seventh inning.

Two walks and a hit-batsman loaded the bases with two outs before junior Shaine Patsilevas got Jay Monroe to ground to shortstop and Dave McCarthy was forced out at second base to clinch the one-run win Wednesday at Raider Field.

Patsilevas was the third pitcher to take the mound for the Raiders, following starter Derek Peluso and Mike Eonta.

Patsilevas entered the game in the top of the fifth inning and surrendered just one hit in three innings to pick up the save.

But the final three outs were a bit more interesting than SV coach Eric Semega would have liked.

"Shaine struggled with his control at times," Semega said. "And at other times, his control was good. I liked the way he battled."

Despite the fact that six Baldwin baserunners reached base during his three innings — including one on an error — Patsilevas did not give up a run.

And it's a good thing he didn't, since Baldwin reliever Sean Gaughan blanked the Raiders from the fourth inning through the sixth.

He came in for starter Brandon Parker, who was tagged for seven runs on seven hits while walking five in three innings on the mound.

Gaughan allowed two baserunners in three frames.

"He performed like the ace of the staff with that performance," Baldwin coach Dan Caponi. "He'll be starting this year for us. He's a competitor and he did a great job today."

It was the Seneca Valley offense that met with success early in the game.

First baseman Tyler Bream and third baseman Cory Mazzoni, who hit third and fourth in SV's lineup, launched back-to-back home runs off of Parker in the bottom of the first inning to give the Raiders a 2-1 edge.

After Peluso scored on a wild pitch in the second frame, Mazzoni followed Bream's third-inning double with another homer to put SV up 5-3.

"It's early in the year and our guys are still getting used to facing live pitching," Semega said. "Hopefully, that will be the meat of our lineup this season, with Tyler and Cory."

Ken Walrond and Kevin Rohm followed with RBI singles, also in the third inning, to increase the advantage to 7-3. They would be the final runs SV (1-1) would score.

Peluso started the game for the Raiders and was pulled after the first two runners reached base in the third inning.

Monroe led off the frame with a ground ball to Mazzoni at third, whose throw toward first hit Peluso in the head and ended up in foul territory. Monroe easily made it to second base.

Peluso stayed in the game, but left after giving up an RBI double to Gaughan a few pitches later.

Eonta, who was credited with the win, came in and pitched two innings, striking out one and walking three.
