Driver badly injured
CLAY TWP — Atownship man was seriously injured late Wednesday night when his pickup truck rolled over three times on Route 8 and landed on top of him, authorities said.
Dwayne Hartman, 42, was listed in critical condition this morning at Presbyterian Hospital in Pittsburgh, where he was flown by medical helicopter after the 11:25 p.m. crash.
Hartman suffered a severe head injury and was unconscious when emergency rescue workers got to the crash site, less than one-half mile north of Muddy Creek Drive.
Police said Hartman was northbound on Route 8 when he lost control of his 2006 GMCSierra, apparently while traveling home. The pickup went off the east berm then traveled across both lanes and hit an embankment on the west berm.
While investigators do not know what caused the wreck, police suspect alcohol could have been a factor.
Hartman, who was not wearing a seat belt, was thrown out during the triple rollover crash; the truck landed on its wheels in the middle of the road, with Hartman underneath, said Chief Mark Lauer of the Unionville Volunteer Fire Department.
Occupants in a car traveling behind the pickup witnessed the wreck, which occurred about two miles from Hartman's house.
Lauer immediately called in a Stat Medevac helicopter, which landed at the Unionville fire station and flew Hartman to the Pittsburgh hospital.
Aportion of Route 8 was closed for about 90 minutes following the crash.
