Church water bill was mistake
FORD CITY — It appears the borough was fallible when it sent a local church a water bill for more than $2.8 million.
Borough council last week voted to send the Second Baptist Church a bill for $2,832,533 for water used when a line broke inside a vacant building the church owns, but doesn't use. About 1.4 million gallons ran from the broken 2-inch line before the leak was discovered and repaired.
But now Ford City officials are saying the bill was wrongly computed. The church was billed about $2 a gallon when the wrong information was plugged into a computer, instead of $6.88 per 1,000 gallons, Borough Council President Tim Malec said Monday.
The new bill is $9,873.
Church trustee Eugene Banks has said the pipes froze and burst because there was no heat in the building.
