HOUSTON — The Houston Texans on Friday waived quarterback David Carr, the first draft pick in franchise history five years ago, and running back Domanick Williams.
The Texans never have had a winning record, and Carr often was the scapegoat. He completed 60 percent of his passes, but also threw 65 interceptions and was sacked 249 times in five seasons.
Williams, formerly Domanick Davis, is Houston's career rushing leader with 3,195 yards. He spent all of last season on injured reserve with a knee injury.
KINGSTON, Jamaica — The international governing body of cricket said Friday it would investigate whether match-fixing was a motive for the slaying of Pakistan coach Bob Woolmer, who was strangled after his team was upset by Ireland.Police believed more than one person may have killed Woolmer, 58, in his 12th-floor hotel room Sunday. His team's humiliating defeat March 17 assured Pakistan's elimination from the Cricket World Cup.
SUPERSTITION MOUNTAIN, Ariz. — Lorena Ochoa made two eagles Friday to take a one-stroke lead over Catriona Matthew in the suspended second round of the Safeway International.Ochoa eagled the par-4 sixth, holing a 6-iron from 165 yards. On the par-5 13th, she hit her second shot within 10 feet of the green and holed a 30-foot wedge shot.Matthew was 8 under through 17 holes, twice making chips for birdies.Norway's Suzann Pettersen was the clubhouse leader at 7 under after a 68.
KEY BISCAYNE, Fla. — Robert Kendrick, who made the draw only because Lleyton Hewitt pulled out, reached the third round of the Sony Ericsson Open tennis tournament Friday after beating Raemon Sluiter 6-4, 6-4.Ranked 87th, Kendrick lasted longer in the tournament than fellow American James Blake, who hit another low in his two-month slump by losing to Florent Serra 7-6 (8), 2-6, 6-3.
