M. Gretchen Schaffner Butler, 89, a 33-year resident of Stockton, Calif., died Feb. 6.

She was born in Warren, Pa., Sept. 23, 1917, and raised in Butler.

During her career, she worked for one president, at least three bishops and a variety of government and community groups. In 1941, while working for the Navy Department, she was one of a select group who transcribed war plans for President Franklin Delano Roosevelt.

Mrs. Butler retired after 16 years with the Diocese of Stockton.

The family also had lived in Newport Beach, Calif.; Hawaii and Okinawa.

She was a devoted wife and loved doing things with her family and traveling.

Surviving are her children, James. Jr. (Linda) of Birmingham, Ala., David of Waipahu, Hawaii, Susi (Stennett) Bell and Pat (Lisa), both of Stockton; a sister, Eleanore Heberling of Sun City, Ariz.; seven grandchildren; and seven great-grandchildren.

Her husband of 65 years, James "Jim" Butler, died in September 2006. She also was preceded in death by a brother, Jake, and a sister, Joanne.
