SLIPPERY ROCK — She's talked about at restaurants.

She's discussed at bakeries and brewpubs. Her name comes up over sandwiches and seafood.

Walk Main Street in Slippery Rock these days, stop someone and ask him about her, and he knows her name.

She's Jence Rhoads, and her legend is almost as big as the borough in which she lives.

Fans of the SlipperyRock HighSchool girls basketball team will tell you about her left-handed 3-pointer that helped beat Sharon in the District 10 championship game. They'll tell you about how she can dribble through double- and triple-teams on the way to a pull-up jumper that hits nothing but net.

is Jence Rhoads.They'll tell you how she has changed a team and rallied a town around her.And she'll blush and coyly answer when asked about all the attention she gets."It's nice, I guess," says Rhoads, who was named the first three-time winner of the Butler Eagle Girls Basketball Player of the Year Award.Little girls clamor for her autograph, and she politely signs for every last one of them.She's heading to Vanderbilt University on a full scholarship and she has designs on playing professionally one day.The list of her accolades is as long as Main Street, and it keeps growing:• She scored 2,168 points in her career and 634 this season alone.• She is a four-time Butler Eagle Girls Basketball first-teamer.• She averaged 21.1 points, 7.5 rebounds, 6.1 assists and 5.6 steals per game this season.• She averaged 25.8 points per game in the playoffs."Obviously, everyone in the community knows the name Jence Rhoads," said Slippery Rock coach Adrienne Orris. "Just that presence has brought a lot to this town. Girls look at her and parents tell them, 'This is who you want to be like.'"Rhoads shrugs off her influence.She sees herself as just another senior on just another pretty good basketball team.She is flattered by the attention, but doesn't feel the added pressure that comes with it."Is there pressure? I don't know," Rhoads said. "I don't really feel it. I'm not trying to act a certain way. I'm just being myself."She is cognizant, though, of the youth who see her as a role model.Crowds at Slippery Rock games swelled this season with younger kids coming to see her play and bringing their parents."I have actually thought about it," Rhoads said. "I know young girls and boys are watching me, looking up to me to do the right thing."Her place in Slippery Rock history is as steady as her jump shot. Rhoads most likely will go down as one of, if not the, best female basketball player ever to wear a Rockets' uniform.In 20 years, people will still be talking about the time Jence Rhoads hit a left-handed 3-pointer to beat Sharon."I'm sure, in years to come, I'll always remember this year," Rhoads said.
