Hand grenade, drug items seized in search

BUTLER TWP — A functioning hand grenade, a sawed-off shotgun, marijuana and drug paraphernalia were seized Tuesday during a police search of a house on Evans City Road, township police said.

But the discovery of the illegal property happened by chance, authorities said, as officers did not find what they were looking for in the home — items taken in a burglary earlier this month.

Police, however, now expect charges could be filed soon in two separate criminal cases.

Investigators have been searching for clues and conducting interviews since a home in the Lyndora area was burglarized on March 10. Police declined to identify the homeowner or tenant.

Asmall safe was taken in the break-in, as was jewelry, a Sony PlayStation and video games. Authorities believe at least two people were involved in the burglary, said police Chief Gary Garman.

Police on Tuesday obtained a warrant to search a home in the 400 block of Evans City Road, where investigators suspected some of the property stolen from the burglary could be stashed.

Police on Wednesday still had not returned the inventory list from the search to the office of District Judge Kevin O'Donnell, who issued the warrant.

The grenade was taken away by the Allegheny County Explosive Ordnance Disposal Team.
