Rock tennis slips past Charleston

The Slippery Rock University women's tennis team edged the University of Charleston (W.Va.) 5-4 in Hilton Head, S.C., Tuesday.

Kayla Blackburn and Laura Handy won 8-4 at No. 1 doubles, and Lara Rizzi and Christina Rhodes 8-5 won at No. 3 doubles to give The Rock a 2-1 advantage in the doubles matches after the teams had split the six singles matches.

SRU (10-3) plays Macalester University today.

The Rock improved to 2-6 by posting a 13-5 victory over Penn State-Behrend at the latter's invitational Sunday.Erika Brunner and Heather Walbright scored five goals each in the victory. Brunner added three assists and a steal, while Walbright had three steals.Beth Choike added two goals and Ashley Goodwill one for The Rock. Lauren Surbaugh had eight saves.SRU faces Brown at the Wolverine Invitational Friday in Ann Arbor, Mich.
