KITTANNING — Having already taken care of business, Freeport was looking to enjoy Senior Night Wednesday and its final game before the playoffs.

The Yellowjackets clinched their first PIHL Class A North Division hockey title with a 5-3 win over Mars last Friday and were looking for a final tune-up before the upcoming playoffs.

As it turned out, Freeport got goals from seniors Beau Zack, Zach Hepler and Patrick Spangler in a 3-0 victory over Sewickley Academy at the Belmont Complex.

That didn't stop Freeport coach Dave Hepler from saying that he thought his team's performance was a little flat.

"I think we were a little down tonight," said Hepler, whose team won its 10th consecutive game. "We played a much better game against Mars.

"I think the guys read the paper and did not take this game so seriously," he added.

To be fair, Sewickley Academy goalie Steven Tehovnik made 36 saves and kept his squad relatively close.

Zack, who finished the season as the top point scorer in Class A with 58, split a pair of defenders on his way to the net and slipped the puck past Tehovnik with 7:35 left in the first period for a 1-0 Yellowjackets lead.

Shane Gallagher nearly doubled the lead with 13:04 left in the second period when he hit the post, but Hepler did score nearly five minutes later.

Hepler corralled the puck just past mid-ice, turned back and weaved his way through traffic before firing the puck in front of the net.

Before that goal, Tehovnik had made 21 of 22 saves.

"We've got five or six guys that can score," said coachHepler. "Beau has a lot of points and Patrick too. They're something like first and third in scoring.

"We also have my two sons, Zach and Jeremy, John Reichenbaugh, Cody Barker, we have a bunch of guys with points," he added.

Spangler closed the scoring with a goal with 1:58 left in the second period. In the third period, the Yellowjackets (15-3-2) went into a defensive mode to keep the game under control.

The Yellowjackets reached uncharted territory when they won the division title.

"That's the first time in Freeport's history that's ever happened," said Hepler. "I'm proud of those guys. They got it done."

Notes: The Yellowjackets, the No. 2 seed in the Class A playoffs, will host No. 7 seeded Westmont-Hilltop March 14. ... Tim Zahumensky made 13 saves in earning the shutout. ... Freeport was 0-for-4 on the power play; Sewickley Academy (3-15-2) was 0-for-3. ... Freeport won the first matchup 8-1 on Feb. 1. ... In its 10-game winning streak, Freeport has outscored its opponents 68-18, 120-53 in 20 games.
