Four individuals and 10 members of the Slippery Rock High School swim team will compete in the District 10 Championships this Saturday.
Individual competitors include Vicky Kosiorek in the 100-yard butterfly (1:12.03 qualifying time) and 100 backstroke (1:13.22), Andrew Opalewski in the 50 freestyle (24.75) and 100 freestyle (55.80), Kyle Hawk in the 100 backstroke (1:06.78) and Hannah Parsons in the 100 breaststroke (1:20.78).
Joining the individual qualifiers on the boys side are Chuck Davies and Caleb Sykora-Bodie in the 200 freestyle relay (1:47.54) and 400 freestyle relay (4:10.97).
On the girls side, Alyssa Martinez, Whitney Snyder and Katelyn Brozenic join individual swimmers in the 200 medley, 200 freestyle and 400 freestyle relays.
Keith Wynn scored 29 points and Kevin Scott added 23 as the Butler County Community College men's basketball team downed Montgomery College-Takoma Park (Md.) 96-95 Tuesday night.The win puts the Pioneers (13-12) in the Region XX tournament, which starts Thursday at Hagerstown Junior College in Maryland.BC3 will play No. 1 seed Montgomery College-Germantown at 8 p.m. Thursday.
Kim Nowakowski, a Butler High graduate, scored 25 points and added 14 rebounds for California (Pa.) University in a 79-65 win over Shippensburg in a PSAC women's basketball playoff Tuesday.It marks the fifth consecutive game that Nowakowski has managed a double-double.
NEW YORK — The Hall of Fame pitched another shutout.Ron Santo, Jim Kaat, Marvin Miller and all the other candidates were left out when the Veterans Committee admitted no new members for the third straight election.The blank slate could lead to changes before the next vote in 2009.Santo came the closest to the required 75 percent. A nine-time All-Star, the former Cubs third baseman was picked on 57 of 82 ballots (70 percent). Players needed 62 for election.
