SRU hosts series on Darfur region
SLIPPERY ROCK — The Slippery Rock University chapter of Amnesty International will focus the spotlight on the conflict-ridden Darfur region of western Sudan when it presents "Genocide: The Crisis in Darfur" next week.
The weeklong series is designed to increase awareness about the region, which has been ripped by conflict between rival military groups since 2003. Up to 2.5 million people are believed to have been displaced by the fighting, which has been called "ethnic cleansing" and "genocide."
The week's activities include:
• Monday: "Darfur Diaries," a documentary, at 7 p.m., Advanced Technology and Science Hall auditorium.
• Tuesday: A "Peace Party" with games, 6 to 8 p.m., University Union.
• Wednesday: A faculty panel discussing "Genocide in Darfur" at 7 p.m. in the Advanced Technology and Science Hall auditorium. Heather Frederick, assistant professor of political science, will moderate.
• Thursday: A candlelight vigil, 7 p.m., Bailey Library Quad.
• Saturday: A Darfur Summit, 10 a.m. to 3 p.m., in the Advanced Technology and Science Hall auditorium. There will be a keynote address by Phil Wilhelm, who works in Washington, D.C., with an organization focused on preventing genocide. He just returned from several months in the region.
