EAST BUTLER— Phase IIof the Speed-OField wall project is under way.

The East Butler Baseball Association began a project last year to construct a 15-foot wall along the outfield of the largest of its four fields.

Phase I of the project resulted in 130 linear feet of wall being built last year, extending from the left field line to left-center field.

Advertising signs comprise the wall.

"Our next phase is to add 220 linear feet and bring construction across to right-center field," project chairman Dess Schnur said. "We're planning a solid green wall in center field, 75 to 80 feet high."

Schnur said the goal of the project is to make Speed-O Field one of the premier baseball facilities in Butler County.

"When this wall is completed, there will be a sense of a country ballpark feeling,"he said.

Fifty-eight units need to be sold to complete the second phase of the project.

An estimated 10,000 people attend park activities at Speed-OField annually. Two Pony League teams, two Colt League teams and Junior and Senior American Legion teams play there.

"Around 80 games are played there annually,"Schnur said. "The East Butler Midget football team practices there as well."

The scoreboard at Speed-OField was renovated last year and a canopy is expected to be erected over the bleachers at the field this season.

"This wall project has two purposes,"Schnur said. "It supports the youth of Butler County, because a lot of kids play here, and it gives businesses high visibility."

More than 2,000 Butler County players used the complex in 2006 with more than 350 games played there overall.

Phase IIis expected to be completed by May 8, before any team begins play there this year.
