RIMERSBURG — When the shot fell softly through the net, TiffanyCorle pumped her fist and then raised it toward the din.

The rabid Union girls basketball crowd erupted because Corle had just scored the 1,000th point of her career late in the second quarter of the Damsels' 62-20 thrashing of Cameron County in the first round of the District 9 Class A playoffs Tuesday night.

"I just feel relieved," the senior guard-forward said. "It's not just I got 1,000 points. We just really took our first big step toward the District 9 title game."

Corle, who came into the game nine points shy of her goal, became the 11th player inUnion girls basketball history to achieve the milestone — and she might be the most unlikely one to do it.

She was surrounded by stellar scorers the last three seasons. Two of them, Andrea Mortimer and Bethany Koch, graduated last season with 2,882 points between them.

In the eyes of Union coach Josh Meeker, that makes the feat all the more amazing.

"It's one of the most impressive performances I've seen," Meeker said. "There were two 1,000-point scorers just one year ahead of her, and she plays on a team where we share the ball pretty well. The nice thing about Tiff is she was willing to wait her turn."

When her turn came this season, Corle wondered whether she would be able to reach the mark.

She admitted she pressed in those first few games to try to reach 1,000 points. After the first four games, she decided not to focus on it so much and became much more relaxed.

But when Tuesday came and she gazed up at the Corle-O-Meter hanging on the gym wall counting down to 1,000, she could barely contain herself.

"(Scoring 1,000 points) is something I've been working for since my freshman year, and, now I finally got it, it's just a big relief," Corle said.

Corle ended up with 20 points to lead Union (23-3), which had to shake off some shooting woes in the first half for the lopsided win.

Corle scored 12 of Union's 25 points in the first half as the Damsels led by 12 at the break.

Union was 7-of-35 shooting in the first two quarters and was 9-of-24 from the free throw line.

CameronCounty committed 16 fouls in the first half and had 47 turnovers in the game. It took only 26 shots.

Union finished the game shooting a mere 33 percent from the floor and a poor 13-of-35 from the free throw line, yet still won by 42.

It had Meeker scratching his head.

"I don't have any answers for it," Meeker said. "I've tried everythingI can think of."

The tide changed in the second half as Union rolled off 25 straight points covering most of the third quarter and part of the final period to put the game away.

The Damsels outscored CameronCounty 37-7 in the second half.

However, there was no doubt the night belonged toCorle, who recently committed to play college basketball at Indiana (Pa.) University.

At IUP, it's likely she will square off against former teammate Koch, who is a freshman this season at Clarion University.

"I'm really excited to play Beth Koch next year," Corle said. "It's going to be a lot of fun. The gym is going to be packed."

The Union gym will be packed Thursday when it hosts Northern Potter at 7 p.m. in the second round of the playoffs.
