James Paul 'Butch' Marlowe

James Paul "Butch" Marlowe, 61, of Oil Creek Township, Crawford County, formerly of Slippery Rock, died at 12:15 p.m. Monday at Shadyside Hospital, Pittsburgh, after a five-month illness.

Born in Butler, Feb. 14, 1945, he was the son of William J. Marlowe and Rachel Margaret Smeltzer.

He was a 1963 alumnus of New Wilmington High School. In 1967, he graduated from Slippery Rock University with a bachelor's degree in biology; and in 1974, he received his master's degree in natural science from the University of Idaho.

Mr. Marlowe was a science and biology teacher for 36 years in the Titusville School District and retired in 2003 as the science department chair. He and his wife also retired as co-owners of Shopene's Jewelry Store in 2003.

He was a member of the Emanuel Lutheran Church in Titusville. He was a charter member of the White Chips Investment Club of Titusville and was a member of the Titusville Chamber of Commerce Board of Directors until 2002.

He loved carpentry, reading and travel. He was an avid hunter, fisherman and card player, but his greatest enjoyment was spending time with his family.

Surviving are his wife, E. Lynn Dillinger Marlowe, whom he married Aug. 23, 1969, at the Emanuel Lutheran Church, Titusville; two daughters, Nicole L. Elan and her husband, Joseph, of Titusville and Karen R. (Ryan) Wig of Greenville; a son, Matthew J. Marlowe of Pittsburgh; and two grandchildren, Katherine and Jack Elan, both of Titusville.

He also is survived by a brother, William T. (Edith) Marlowe of Butler; two sisters, Donna Grossman of Slippery Rock and Betty Walker and her husband, George, of Grove City; a sister-in-law, Esther Marlowe of Slippery Rock, and numerous nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by a brother, Joseph.

<B>MARLOWE </B>— Friends of James Paul "Butch" Marlowe, who died Monday, Jan. 8, 2007, will be received from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. Thursday at the <B>Smith Funeral Home</B>, 421 New Castle St., Slippery Rock.Services will be at 11 a.m. Friday at the funeral home with the Rev. Kathleen Meyers, a close family friend from Michigan, officiating.Burial will be at the Wolf Creek Cemetery, Worth Township.Memorial contributions may be made to the Emanuel Lutheran Church, 220 W. Elm St. Titusville, PA 16354, or to the Titusville Alumni Association.
