PITTSBURGH — Former All-Pro center Jeff Hartings told his Pittsburgh Steelers teammates shortly after the season ended that he's retiring after 11 NFL seasons.
"He's done. He told all of us," tackle Max Starks told a Pittsburgh newspaper.
The Steelers haven't announced Hartings' retirement.
Hartings, from Penn State, was a first-round draft pick by Detroit in 1996, and played guard with the Lions before being moved to center by Pittsburgh — a position he had never played. Because of ongoing knee problems, he considered retiring several times but returned to play for the Steelers' Super Bowl-winning team in the 2005 season.
PITTSBURGH — The Pittsburgh Pirates ended their long search for a right-handed starter Thursday, agreeing to a $3.5 million, one-year contract with Tony Armas Jr.Armas gets $3 million this year, and the deal includes a $5 million mutual option for 2008 with a $500,000 buyout. His 2008 salary can increase depending on his performance this year.The 28-year-old Armas was 9-12 with a 5.03 ERA in 30 starts with the Washington Nationals last season. He made his major league debut with Montreal in 1999 and has a 48-60 record and a 4.45 ERA in 151 career starts.
PITTSBURGH — A federal court has dismissed two complaints filed by Evgeni Malkin's former Russian team against the Pittsburgh Penguins rookie star, the team and the NHL.The dismissal by the U.S. District Court in New York had been expected since Nov. 15, when Judge Loretta A. Preska denied Metallurg Magnitogorsk's request for a temporary injunction blocking Malkin from continuing to play in the NHL. The Russian team declined to appeal that ruling.
MIAMI — The Miami Dolphins will host the New York Giants in a regular-season game in London later this year.A person familiar with the NFL's decision told The Associated Press Thursday that the Dolphins will move a home game overseas. The source spoke on condition of anonymity because the announcement will not be made until after commissioner Roger Goodell's Super Bowl news conference today.The Dolphins and Giants will play in September or October, and the game will be scheduled around a bye week for both teams. The schedule won't be released until early spring.
