Tigers take 2
BUTLER TWP — The North Allegheny boys swimming team is gunning for its fourth consecutive undefeated season.
The Tigers arguably are the favorites to win the WPIAL and could be serious threats at the state meet.
On Thursday, they set three Butler pool records on their way to a 117-60 victory.
However, the way Tigers coach Corky Semler sees it, this squad still has a long way to go.
"We have some work to do," said Semler, whose girls team also won, 103-81, over the Tornado. "We've swam well at points this season. We didn't swim well (Thursday), but we're so talented.
"This is the deepest boys team I've had. Time will tell if it's the best. There are 12 kids who all know what they're doing and eight are legitimate state qualifiers," Semler added.
"NAis one of the favorites in the WPIAL for boys, so anytime we get close to them with one of our guys, that's good," said Butler coach Jeff Armstrong. "We had a lot of best times."
John Rhodaberger highlighted the Tornado boys meet with a win in the 1-meter diving after totaling 242.35 points.
In the girls meet, Butler captured eight of the 12 events, but the depth of the Tigers played a key.
"The girls don't have as much talent as the boys do, but they're very close competitors," said Semler. "Our best swimmer was sick and two of our top sprinters were not in the meet."
Still, Butler turned in some strong performances, led by Brittany Vogel, Molly Evans and Sarah Clouse.
Vogel won the 200 freestyle in a time of 2 minutes, 3.37 seconds and the 500 freestyle (5:25.22), Evans won the 200 individual medley (2:11.32) and the 100 backstroke (1:00.35), and Clouse the captured the 100 butterfly (1:02.67) and the 100 breaststroke (1:10.14).
The trio also were members of the winning 200 medley and 400 freestyle relays with Ellen Crummy, who placed second behind Evans in her two events.
Evans set two personal records in those events, with Crummy right behind, while Vogel also set a personal best in the 200 freestyle and in the 500 freestyle.
Those kinds of results are not lost on Armstrong, who hopes his younger swimmers understand the importance as well.
"They come in and see, especially when we win so many events, that we can compete with these guys," said Armstrong. "They measure themselves in practice against some of the best swimmers around."
With the losses, both Butler teams, which host Hopewell Tuesday, fell to 2-5
