Butler celebrated "Space Days," Oct. 18 and 19, 1962, with an exhibit of NASA space capsules and rockets, including a replica of a Mercury capsule that carried astronauts John Glenn, Gus Grissom and Alan Shepard into orbit. Some of the first pressurized space suits, which cost $6,500 each, also were on display in the middle of Main Street. The exhibit, which ran from Cunningham to Jefferson streets, included a variety of stainless steel rockets and other space equipment provided by Armco. Vernon Wise Jr., Butler Eagle publisher, organized the event for the then-Butler Businessmen's Bureau of the Butler Area Chamber of Commerce.
