Raiders wrestlers earn 450th win

Seneca Valley's Alex Reddinger wraps up Luke Carson of Knoch during their 130-pound match Wednesday. The Raiders beat the Knights 62-11.

JACKSON TWP — Seneca Valley and Knoch entered Wednesday's wrestling match with a lot of inexperience in their respective lineups.

The biggest difference? About 40 years and 449 victories.

The Raiders used six pins and a pair of forfeits to roll to a 62-11 decision and, in the process, capture the program's 450th win.

"We're starting to get up there," said Seneca Valley coach Lee Mullett, whose team has only four seniors. "Most of those wins came from coach (Ken) Lockey.

"We knew a little about Knoch. They are an up-and-coming program. They won a match already this season, and that's impressive for a first-year team," Mullett added.

"That's the fact of the matter. We are a young and inexperienced team," said Knights coach Mark McLaughlin, whose squad is in its first season as a varsity program. "When you set the tone with two quick pins, it's hard to block that out."

The Raiders (7-6) grabbed pins by Ryan Scheller at 215 pounds in 31 seconds and by Zach Eckstrom at 285 in 1:35 for an early 12-0 lead.

The Knights (1-11) responded with a pin by Grayson Hixon at 103 over Nick Phillips to cut the deficit in half, but the Raiders reeled off wins in the next five matches, including an 11-2 major decision win by Grant Evans (112) and a pin from Dan Papst (119), to take a 34-6 lead.

At 140, Nash Leslie picked up the Knights' other win of the evening, a 17-0 technical fall over Shon Schettler.

"We figured at (103) we'd be all right and at (140) we'd be OK, too," said McLaughlin. "I thought we had a very good shot at 112.

"When we make hay, we make it at the lightweight matches,"McLaughlin added.

The Raiders then finished the match by winning the final five bouts, with pins by Pat Coyne (145), Dave Kovach (160) and Zach Cahall (171) in that stretch along with a 12-0 major decision by Frank Mullett (152) and a forfeit win by Jordan Williams (189).

"When you wrestle a team like Seneca Valley, it shows at times how inexperienced you are," said McLaughlin. "The fact is we're very inexperienced and there's nothing you can do about it but keep wrestling and get that experience."
