Indians topple Raiders
ROSS TWP — It was a game that Seneca Valley teams of the past would have lost.
Unfortunately for the Raiders, that tradition continued.
Entering Friday's game at North Hills, the Raiders had won four of their last five games, including two straight Section 3-AAAA contests.
But Seneca Valley (8-5, 2-3) hit a wall in the form of a 56-47 boys basketball loss to the Indians, which sends the team back under .500 in section play.
"We really put ourselves back tonight," said SV coach Vic Giannotta. "And we could've separated ourselves with a win."
Instead, the Raiders now find themselves fifth out of seven teams in the section standings.
The Indians led 39-27 after three quarters and pushed that edge to 47-29 with 3:40 left in the game.
SV then reeled off 13 straight points to pull to within 47-42 with 2:03 to play.
Included in the Raiders' run was a 4-point play from SV's Gabe Grinder with 2:38 left.
North Hills' Dave McIntyre scored a basket to end his team's offensive drought, making it 49-42 with 1:54 remaining. The Indians then iced the game from the free throw line.
"It's tough when you're down by 18 and then you cut it to five points," said Giannotta.
Aiding in SV's comeback were three straight turnovers by North Hills (5-8, 2-2) on their own end of the floor.
"We were inbounding the ball and then turning it over," said North Hills Buzz Gabos. "Then we realized that we should just bust it out — throw it long.
"You know, we're not used to being up like that," he added. "We're usually on the other end of that."
Dante Anglin led the Indians with 16 points, including a two-point bucket with one second remaining in the first half that gave his team the 22-20 lead at the break.
"He picked up his third foul right at the beginning of the third quarter," Gabos said of Anglin. "He did a great job of playing with those fouls."
Kevin Mayberry scored 16 points for the Raiders.
From late in the second quarter until John Fitzpatrick's two-pointer with 3:39 left in the game, Mayberry was the only player on his team to make a shot from the floor.
"That's because everybody was just standing around waiting for Kevin to shoot the ball," explained Giannotta. "You can't just stand there and watch, You have to be in the flow of the game."
C.J. Brown added 11 points for the Raiders, seven of them coming in the final period.
Notes: The Raiders forced 21 turnovers while committing 17 of their own. ... Both teams grabbed 28 rebounds.
