Here are a few other notes about 2006 Butler County athletics as we say goodbye to another year:
GAME OF THE YEARKarns City quarterback Matt Endlish engineered an 82-yard drive with no timeouts in the final minute as the Gremlins edged Moniteau, 32-29, in a District 9 Class AAfootball playoff game.
OUT OF THIS WORLD• Mars wrestler Dave Pisarcik was undefeated and was never taken down in a match until deep into the postseason. His first and only loss occurred in the state championship match.• Mars running back Billy Bair scored 28 touchdowns in only 10 games to lead the Planets back to the WPIALfootball playoffs.
OLD AND NEW• Knoch boys basketball coach Les Shoop ended a 37-year coaching career — including 24 with the Knights — that produced more than 500 victories.• Mark McLaughlin instituted the first varsity wrestling team in Knoch High School history.
RECORD ROMPSTyler Grossman and Alyssa Deal graduated from Moniteau High School with the Warriors' career scoring records in boys and girls basketball, respectively — and neither went on to play in college.
BACK IN THE DRIVER'S SEATLynn Geisler of Cranberry Township won the Late Models points championship at Lernerville Speedway for the first time in 12 years.
TITLE TOSSMoniteau's Matt Schandelmeier set the District 9 javelin record while winning that event during the district meet at Clarion University.
JUST WIN, BABYKarns City's boys cross country team ran its dual meet winning streak to 30 before finally tasting defeat.
MOVING ONButler athletic director Tim O'Malley left the school district to replace Larry Hanley as executive secretary of the WPIAL.
REACHING THE TOPThe Mars girls golf team, in existence for only a few years, won the WPIALchampionship.
