KARNS CITY — The scoreboard said it was the first quarter, but the Karns City HighSchool boys basketball team was shooting as if it was the fourth period.

And the final quarter has not been kind to the Gremlins lately.

That carried over to the first eight minutes Thursday night against East Forest when Karns City hit just 3-of-21 shots.

But the Gremlins survived their sluggish start, thanks to 29 East Forest turnovers and 27 offensive rebounds in a 70-38 home win.

"We started the way we ended the last two games, I guess," said Karns City coach Steve Andreassi, who watched his team shoot a combined 2-of-28 in the fourth quarters of the last two games. "What happened in the last two fourth quarters and the first quarter tonight ... I think it has gotten into their heads a little bit."

It helped that East Forest struggled on the boards.

Karns City (4-2 overall, 2-1 in the KSAC) outrebounded the Bears 44-21. EastForest (1-4, 0-3) had only four offensive boards.

"That's been the story of our season," said East Forest coach Jerry Thornton.

Karns City trailed 9-7 early in the second quarter, but went on a 15-0 run.

Mike Senopole spurred that run, finding his range from the right wing and scoring 11 of his 15 points in the second quarter.

East Forest hit two quick 3-pointers at the start the third quarter to cut the lead to nine, but the Bears never seriously threatened.

Karns City pushed its lead to 30 points midway through the fourth quarter.

Cameron Turner finished with 14 points and 14 rebounds and Matt McConnell added 10 points for the Gremlins, who shot much better in the second half.

"I think we're blessed this year," Andreassi said. "We have a couple of 6-3 kids who can both jump really well."
