No points for style

Freeport's Brady Sherrieb pushes past Kittanning's Derrick Taylor Friday in the Yellowjackets' 70-49 victory.
Freeport will accept ugly win over Wildcats

FREEPORT — There were certainly enough crooked numbers to keep the Freeport HighSchool stat girls busy.

Some of the highlights included 55 turnovers, 26 offensive rebounds by Freeport, 55 missed shots by the Yellowjackets.

And zero style points.

"That was a pretty ugly game, huh?" asked Freeport coach Mike Beale.

But at the end of the night, the 70-49 win over Kittanning was just as pretty as the stat girls who tallied those ugly numbers.

"Hey, not every game is a masterpiece," Beale said.

Freeport (3-0) had four players in double digits and overcame a woeful shooting night to dispatch the Wildcats.

The Yellowjackets were 23-of-78 from the floor.

They got that many shots because they forced 37 Kittanning turnovers with a defense that was as active as the balls inside the plastic dome of a Fisher-Price Corn Popper push toy.

"We wanted to get a lot of offense out of our defense," Beale said.

Freeport would have gotten more offense had some of its shots fallen.

The poor shooting helped keep Kittanning in the game after the Wildcats fell behind by as many as 17 points in the first half and 22 in the third quarter.

Kittanning was able to cut the lead down to 12 early in the fourth quarter, taking advantage of an 0-of-13 shooting stretch by Freeport, but could get no closer.

"I was happy our guys didn't give up and quit," said Kittanning coach Doug Flanders. "We just have to get back in the gym and work on some of the things that hurt us tonight. Everything we did wrong is correctable."

Freeport's Nate Kotecki scored 13 points and added 13 rebounds, including eight offensive boards.

Brian Zimmerman also scored 13 points and had 10 rebounds, with Brady Sherrieb adding 11 points and Chris Tagmyer 10.

Sherrieb was particularly adept at driving around and through Kittanning's defense.

"I thought BrianZimmerman rose to the occasion on both ends of the floor," Beale said. "(And) Brady is such a phenomenal ball-handler. If they are going to come out and match up against us, we're going to put the ball in our best ball-hander's hands."

Jared Bowser paced Kittanning with 24 points.

Despite the poor shooting night, Beale is not concerned.

"The first two games, we shot extremely well," Beale said. "It was just one of those nights. It was our first home game, so maybe that had something to do with it."
