Charles R. Gatty
Army Chaplain Col. Charles Robert Gatty, retired, 85, of Eufaula, Ala., died Friday at his home.
Born Dec. 27, 1920, in Butler, he was the son of Louis J. and Gladys Webster Gatty.
He served as an enlisted man in the Army Air Force during World War II and as an officer and chaplain in the Army from 1955 until his retirement in 1975.
Chaplain Gatty received the American Campaign Medal, the Asiatic-Pacific Campaign Medal with Bronze Star, the World War II, the Army Occupation Medal-Japan, the Army Commendation Medal, the Vietnam Service Medal with four Bronze Stars, the Bronze Star and the Legion of Merit.
After his retirement from the military, he was director of the Columbus (Ga.) Chapter of the National Conference of Christians and Jews for two years before he moved to Eufaula in 1977.
He had a bachelor of arts degree from Houghton College in Houghton, N.Y.; a bachelor of divinity degree from the Evangelical Theological Seminary of Naperville, Ill.; and a master of education degree from Georgia State University.
Chaplain Gatty was a member of the United Methodist Church. He also belonged to VFW Post 5850 in Eufaula, the Marquetry Society of America, the Association of the U.S. Army and the Naturalist Club. He was a volunteer for the Eufaula Wildlife Refuge.
Survivors include his wife, Thelma Smith Gatty; two daughters, Elizabeth Ellen (William Taylor) Kirkpatrick of Dacula, Ga., and Pamela (Steve) Belcher of Montgomery, Ala.; two sons, Robert Charles Gatty of Poolesville, Md., and David Lawrence (Connie Lynn) Gatty of Pilot Point, Texas; a brother, Dr. Eugene (Dr. Anne) Gatty of Butler; seven grandchildren, David Charles Gatty of Loveland, Ohio, Michael Robert Gatty of Salisbury, Md., Dr. Sean Michael Kirkpatrick of Aldie, Va., Sgt. Brandon Andrews Peters, currently in Iraq, James Robert Peters of Alexander City, Ala., Shaye Kirkpatrick Bryson of Buford, Ga., and Dr. Shelley O'Foran of Sterling, Va.; and 10 great-grandchildren.
He also is survived by a sister-in-law, Molly Smith Seago; and a brother-in-law, Herman Victor Seago.
