Main Street Salutes Christmas

The neon lights of downtown Butler's former businesses outshone Christmas decorations strung across Main Street on Dec. 2, 1968. On that day, The Eagle photographer that day aimed his camera north through the heart of the business district during a momentary lull in the flow of pre-holiday traffic and shoppers, which had been heavy or was expected to pick up, as the two police officers at Jefferson and Cunningham streets would indicate. Unfortunately, of the signs that are visible and legible in the photo, only two — Worsely's on the right side, far end of MainStreet at the corner of East North Street, and Miller's Shoes, also on the right side of Main Street and closest to the reader — are the only two still in business.
