A tough task ahead

Brookville sees battle in KC matchup

It seems as season goes on, the Karns City football team finds more ways to find a way to win.

And Brookville coach Chris Dworek is well aware of that.

The Gremlins, 32-29 victors over Moniteau in last Saturday's District 9 Class AA semifinal game, will face the Raiders at 1 p.m. Saturday at Clarion University's Memorial Stadium in the district final.

"All three phases of the game are very important," said Dworek. "Karns City is pretty solid in all three, and that's why they've been so successful this year.

"To be mentally tough, you have to believe you can, win and if you're behind, you have to believe you can win. If blocking a kick or returning one for a score is what they need to do, they'll do it,"Dworek added.

The Gremlins (10-1), who have six defensive touchdowns and two more on special teams, pulled out another come-from-behind win, this time against the Warriors.

After an early 7-0 Gremlins lead, Moniteau responded with three second-quarter touchdowns to take a 19-7 lead into halftime.

"I thought we had the potential to play well offensively and defensively, and we did," said Karns City coach Ed Conto. "They hit one play. We didn't get our defense called and no one rushed the quarterback and they hit a big play.

"Then, we went in the tank, lost momentum and they scored two more touchdowns. I told the kids we need to refocus. We need to do this and correct that. Once we got the momentum, it was hard to stop,"Conto added.

Gremlins quarterback Matt Endlish, who passed for 269 yards in the game, ran for one touchdown and passed for three more in the second half, the last to Josh Callender with 24 seconds left to close out the scoring.

"Matt is very athletic," said Dworek, who is in his 11th season at Brookville. "He can scramble when he has to. He can roll out and throw on the run."

Endlish has passed for 1,228 yards, nine touchdowns and 12 interceptions. He has five receivers with nine or more catches, led by Cameron Turner's 14 for 328 yards and two scores, and Callender's 11 for 199 and three scores.

The team's top rusher, Roy Beham (533 yards, eight TD), has not played the past month, which leaves Markus Lavan (283 yards, four TD) and Brett Green (283 yards, two TD) as the top two rushers.

The Gremlins may not have that 1,000-yard runner or 20-touchdown back, but Dworek can see a lot more when he looks at the Gremlins as a team.

"We're not really stat guys. The main result is playing well, playing tough, and they're doing that," said Dworek.

The Gremlins will try to win their first title since 2001 while Brookville (10-1), who defeated Brockway 39-20 last Saturday to reach the championship game, will try to grab their second championship in three years.
