A young man kisses his mother goodbye in this photograph from July 1966. The man was among 58 others who were drafted for military service in Vietnam. The draftees reported to the Butler County Courthouse that morning for physicals and then boarded a bus for Pittsburgh. After a short stop there, it was off to Fort Benning, Ga., for basic training. A newspaper article from that date said that 26,000 men between the ages of 18½ and 26 were drafted across the country that month and were more than likely joining the 160,000 men alread stationed in the country. It also said the military wanted 400,000 men on the ground in Vietnam by that Christmas.
