Seneca boys 8th at state cross country meet

Chris Cipro placed 43rd and Cam Stauffer 55th overall to help the Seneca Valley boys cross country team grab eighth place in the Class AAA division of the PIAA Championships Saturday in Hershey.

Cipro was clocked at 16 minutes, 23 seconds and Stauffer 16:33 to lead the way, followed by Louis Butler (142, 17:08), Matt Marchese (155, 17:14), Andrew Rasanauskas (182, 17:29), Dan Dickey (204, 17:45) and Eric Geddis (259, 18:25).

The top 10 teams were either from Districts 1 or 7 (the WPIAL). North Allegheny was fifth (166), Seneca Valley eighth (263) and Mount Lebanon ninth (272).

Champion Coatsville (26 points) had four of the top seven finishers and five of the top 11. Its seventh runner placed 27th overall.

"The top 10, that was our goal, but, you never know if you'll make it," said Raiders coach Jim Nagle. "On the website, it had us at 10th and that's what we were going for, but we hoped to sneak in a little higher."

Butler's Ben Porter was 66th (16:38) and Knoch's Ben Hutterer was 95th (16:51).

The Raiders girls squad finished 18th out of 24 teams in the Class AAA girls race, led by Megan Powell (54, 19:38) and Kelly Hahn (65, 19:48).

"Considering we started out the season 0-3 and we sneaked into the state meet, we're very happy," said Nagle. "The girls were 17th last year and 18th this year. It was a great job, what can you say?"

In the Class AA boys race, Mars finished 20th, thanks to a 41st-place showing by Cody Kier (17:03).

Karns City's Travis Hendell had a top-30 performance, placing 29th overall with a time of 16:55.
