Pgh. Episcopalians vote to withdraw

PITTSBURGH — The Episcopalian Diocese of Pittsburgh voted Friday in favor of withdrawing from the national church province and requesting alternative oversight, a vote that came a day before a new presiding bishop for the church is to be installed.

Clergy and lay deputies voted 214-54 in favor of the resolution, with 10 abstentions, at the annual convention of the diocese.

Pittsburgh Bishop Robert Duncan and the leaders of six other conservative dioceses have said they do not want to be overseen by the new Episcopal presiding bishop, Katharine Jefferts Schori.
